Those in control of the affairs of European football have discussed the possibility of creating a third club competition at a meeting of the 54 UEFA member on Wednesday, where they researched the merits of a new competition for clubs that fail to advance from the qualifying round for the Champions League or Europa League, they also considered if the competition could also be reserved for clubs from smaller countries who have never participated in the group stages of the two existing cups.
The discussions are still at an early stage and no modification to club competition structure until when the current round of TV rights deals expire.
According Sportsmail Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan said that "the intention of the new competition would be to allow teams to maintain European football throughout the autumn and perhaps into the new year."
