Novak Djokovic cruises to Qatar Open title

Novak Djokovic eased to a 6-1 6-2 victory over Rafa Nadal to win the Qatar Open and take the lead in head-to-head contests between the two.

The Serb has now beaten Nadal on 24 occasions and he achieved the feat in style, with his opponent unable to secure a foothold in the final as his serve was broken twice in each set in Doha.

The victory leaves Djokovic in a strong position as he prepares to defend his Australian Open crown, with the tournament getting under way in Melbourne on January 18.

Nadal did not get on the scoreboard until the fourth game of the match but it failed to put Djokovic off his stride as he claimed the opening set in just 30 minutes.

Djokovic immediately took control of the second set, breaking his opponent's serve in the very first game.

He repeated the feat and secured a comfortable win in front of members of the Bayern Munich squad and their head coach, Pep Guardiola.

The world No 1 hit 30 winners in the final, forced seven break points and faced only one himself, which he duly saved, during a week in Qatar in which he did not drop a set.

Djokovic has now reached the final of each of the last 15 tournaments he has competed in, with his quarter-final appearance in last year's Qatar Open the last time he has failed to do so.

"I played pretty much perfect tennis today from the very beginning I managed to get every shot the way I wanted," said Djokovic.

"The way I played today gives me great satisfaction."

Nadal said: "Well, for me the match is easy to analyse. I played against a player who did everything perfect. I know nobody playing tennis like this ever. Since I know this sport I never saw somebody playing at this level."
